No Spark for Retro: Why a Petrol Renault 5 Is Off the Table

The dream of a classic petrol-powered Renault 5 is officially dead. Renault has confirmed it won’t offer any gasoline versions of its newly reintroduced lineup, which includes the retro-inspired R5, R4, and even the recently revealed Twingo. All three models are exclusively electric and built on Renault’s bespoke AmpR Small platform, designed from the ground up for battery power.

This means there won’t be any compromises or half measures – like adding a range extender as an afterthought. This decision might surprise some, given recent developments in hybrid technology by Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely. They unveiled the “Horse C15,” a compact unit essentially functioning as a self-contained gasoline range extender for electric vehicles.

The Horse C15 package houses a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine alongside an electric motor, inverter, transmission, and other essential drivetrain components. This setup doesn’t power the wheels directly; instead, it generates electricity to recharge the vehicle’s battery while driving, effectively functioning as a plug-in hybrid with all the benefits of electric propulsion – smooth acceleration and instant torque – along with extended range.

Renault has already indicated its intention to incorporate this Horse C15 technology in its upcoming Megane model, offering customers more choice in larger vehicles. However, when asked directly about applying it to its “three musketeers” (the R5, R4, and Twingo), Renault’s EV chief, Vittorio d’Arienzo, gave a definitive “Not at all.”

He explained that the AmpR Small platform was meticulously designed for electric power, prioritizing design elements like short overhangs and wide wheel arches to maximize interior space and handling. Integrating even a small combustion engine, particularly one with its associated exhaust system, cooling requirements, and fuel tank, would irrevocably compromise these features.

For those craving the familiar charm of a classic Renault in a petrol-powered package, the Clio remains the sole option within the brand’s lineup. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for the sixth generation Clio arriving in the UK in 2027 – it’ll undoubtedly bring its own set of updates and improvements.
