BMW has expanded its electric SUV lineup with a more accessible iX3 40 model, priced at £53,250 – a significant £5,505 reduction from the previously available iX3 50. The move broadens the appeal of BMW’s all-electric offerings, though it comes with a notable compromise in range.
Powertrain and Performance Changes
The iX3 40 swaps the higher-spec model’s dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup for a single rear motor producing 316 horsepower (bhp) and 369 pound-feet (lb ft) of torque. This results in a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds, slightly slower than the iX3 50. The key change is the reduction in battery capacity: the 40 variant features an 82.6 kWh battery compared to the 50’s larger 113.4 kWh pack.
This downsized battery leads to a decreased official range of 395 miles, down from 500 miles in the iX3 50. Despite the lower capacity, the iX3 40 retains fast charging capabilities, supporting up to 300kW for a 10-80% recharge in approximately 21 minutes.
Implications for BMW’s EV Strategy
This move aligns with a broader trend in the EV market: automakers are increasingly offering more affordable variants to attract a wider range of buyers. Lowering the entry price point for the iX3 makes it more competitive against rivals like Tesla’s Model Y and Hyundai’s IONIQ 5.
The iX3 40 powertrain is also anticipated to feature in the upcoming BMW i3 saloon, which shares its platform with the iX3. The i3 will initially launch in the higher-spec 50 trim, before gaining the 40 powertrain option later. Given the i3’s more aerodynamic design, the 40 version could achieve a range exceeding 400 miles – potentially reaching over 559 miles in the 50 variant.
What This Means for Consumers
The iX3 40 provides a more affordable entry into BMW’s electric SUV range, but prospective buyers must weigh the reduced range
