Chinese automaker BYD is phasing out its distinctive rotating infotainment screens, a feature previously highlighted in models like the Atto 1, to streamline compatibility with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and upcoming autonomous driving technologies. The shift reflects a broader industry trend prioritizing seamless app integration over novel hardware gimmicks.
The Appeal and Limitations of Rotating Screens
Originally intended to optimize screen orientation for various functions, the rotating screens allowed users to switch between portrait and landscape modes. However, CarPlay and Android Auto only operated effectively in the landscape position, creating a functional constraint. As BYD Vice President Stella Li explained to Autocar, the company is prioritizing “smooth app integration” and a more universal user experience.
“We are starting to engage in a lot of apps… If they want to give the best experience, then a rotating screen will limit their apps.”
Customer Feedback and Future Development
While the rotating screens were initially well-received, BYD observed limited real-world usage. Coupled with this, customer feedback in Australia indicates a preference for larger, fixed displays over smaller rotating versions. BYD Australia confirmed this preference influenced the decision to move away from the rotating feature in locally sold models.
The company’s long-term focus is shifting toward autonomous driving capabilities, requiring more standardized and adaptable platforms. Li suggests that technical partnerships and app compatibility are now seen as more critical than unique hardware features.
Implications for Future BYD Models
The change will affect upcoming models, including the Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 SUVs, which will also feature fixed touchscreens. The premium Denza brand, recently launched in Australia, also employs fixed screens in its B5 and B8 SUVs.
The decision highlights a pragmatic shift in BYD’s strategy, prioritizing software and app integration over potentially niche hardware innovations. This move positions the brand for greater compatibility with evolving automotive technologies and consumer preferences.
