Jaguar’s legacy shines through in its iconic E-Type, a car that continues to capture imaginations. While the automaker is currently focusing on its future, British coachbuilder Eagle is ensuring the E-Type’s past receives a stunning update. The company’s latest creation, the Eagle Lightweight GTR, represents the pinnacle of E-Type restoration and modification — a vehicle that surpasses even the dreams of Jaguar’s original engineers.

A Legacy of E-Type Expertise

Eagle’s dedication to the E-Type spans decades, exceeding the car’s original production run of 1961–1974. For over 40 years, the company has been restoring, selling, and “restomodding” these classic cars, cultivating a profound understanding of their intricacies. This extensive experience culminates in the Lightweight GTR, arguably the most exceptional E-Type iteration yet.

The Client’s Challenge: Simplicity and Performance

The creation of the Lightweight GTR began with a specific client request: a vehicle that deliberately rejects the modern trend of increasing weight and complexity. The client sought a car that prioritized lightness, comfort, an absence of screens, and a compelling blend of performance and timeless design.

Eagle rose to this challenge with impressive results. The Lightweight GTR builds upon the foundation of Jaguar’s original Lightweight E-Type, a race-focused variant built for motorsports. However, Eagle has transformed it for road use, achieving a remarkable curb weight of just 930 kilograms (approximately 2,000 pounds). This is not only lighter than a current Mazda ND Miata, but approximately equal in weight to an NA Miata. With fluids, the car clocks in at 975kg.

A Lightweight Construction

To achieve this remarkable weight reduction, Eagle employs a variety of advanced materials, including aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and carbon fiber. Even seemingly minor details contribute to the car’s lightness; for instance, badges are painted on instead of affixed. Under the hood, the 4.7-liter straight-six engine features titanium connecting rods and benefits from a trio of Weber carburettors. The titanium rods allow the engine to rev higher, increasing power output.

Refined Performance and Comfort

The Lightweight GTR’s performance is further enhanced by a revised suspension system, adjustable Ohlins dampers, and AP racing calipers. The chassis is designed for both long-distance comfort and engaging handling on winding roads.
