KGM Torres Hybrid: A New Competitor to the Toyota RAV4

The popular Toyota RAV4 Hybrid now faces fresh competition from an unexpected source: the KGM Torres Hybrid, the first hybrid vehicle from the Korean brand formerly known as SsangYong. Available in select dealerships now, with a full national rollout planned for December 2025, the Torres Hybrid aims to undercut established rivals on price while offering a unique hybrid experience.

Pricing and Trim Levels

The base Torres Hybrid K30 starts at $45,000 drive-away, making it cheaper than the RAV4 Hybrid, which begins at $45,990 before on-road costs. The higher-spec K40 trim retails for $48,000. However, buyers should note that key safety features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are only available on the K40 model. Luxury options such as ventilated seats and genuine leather upholstery remain exclusive to the petrol-powered Torres Ultimate.

The hybrid variants are visually distinguished by unique badging, alloy wheel designs, and a black C-pillar treatment. Notably, the Torres Hybrid does not offer an all-wheel drive option, a feature commonly found in competitors like the RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson.

Powertrain and Performance

The KGM Torres Hybrid employs a “Dual-Tech Hybrid System” developed in partnership with BYD. This system combines two electric motors with a hybrid-specific transmission, allowing for electric-only operation at speeds up to 100km/h in city driving. When the battery is depleted, the engine seamlessly transitions to generator mode to recharge it, while direct engine power kicks in for acceleration or inclines.

KGM also emphasizes improved ride comfort and handling stability through the inclusion of new shock absorbers with “Smart Frequency Damping.”

What This Means

The KGM Torres Hybrid represents a significant step for the Korean brand as it enters the competitive hybrid SUV market. By undercutting the RAV4 on price, KGM aims to attract budget-conscious buyers. However, the lack of AWD and the omission of certain safety features on the base model may deter some. The partnership with BYD for the hybrid system suggests a growing trend of collaboration between automakers in the electric and hybrid space.

The Torres Hybrid’s success will depend on whether KGM can establish itself as a credible alternative in a segment dominated by established players. Service pricing, currently unannounced, will also play a key role in consumer acceptance.
