Mercedes-AMG Prepares to Unleash Electric Powerhouse: Meet the GLA EQ

Mercedes-AMG is about to shake up the compact luxury SUV segment with its upcoming electric GLA EQ model. While AMG has been grabbing headlines with powerful electric performance sedans and SUVs, this smaller offering promises a surprising amount of punch and features.

Recent spy shots captured near Mercedes’ renowned Nurburgring test track showcase the GLA EQ undergoing rigorous development. Visible modifications like enlarged AMG-specific forged wheels and beefy brake calipers hint at substantial performance upgrades waiting to be unleashed.

The standard GLA, already available as a hybrid or fully electric vehicle, will share its platform with other popular models like the CLA sedan and GLB SUV. However, the AMG EQ version promises to be more than just a souped-up sibling. Leaked information suggests this pocket rocket could channel well over 500 horsepower (507 PS / 373 kW) – surpassing even its powerful gasoline-powered counterparts like the CLA 45.

A key element contributing to this potential power surge is the rumored adoption of three electric motors, a setup borrowed from AMG’s upcoming high-performance GT model. This tri-motor configuration would allow for sophisticated torque vectoring, enabling precise control over individual wheel power delivery. Rumors even hint at a dedicated “drift mode” – an unexpected yet thrilling addition to this compact SUV.

Adding weight to the speculation of advanced electric hardware is Mercedes’ acquisition of British motor manufacturer Yasa. Yasa specializes in ultra-compact and powerful electric motors. Their technology has already been touted for its impressive power density, with a single motor reportedly achieving an astounding 1,006 hp (1,020 PS / 750 kW) output during testing. It’s highly plausible that these cutting-edge units will find their way into the AMG GLA EQ.

Mercedes plans to launch the AMG GLA EQ in showrooms sometime in 2027. This upcoming electric SUV promises a compelling blend of high performance, sophisticated technology, and the practicality expected from the GLA nameplate.
