Mercedes-Benz Confirms ‘Little G’ Arrival by 2027

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to expand its iconic G-Class lineup with a smaller, more accessible model – internally dubbed the ‘Little G’ – slated for release by 2027. This move mirrors the strategy employed by Jaguar Land Rover with its Range Rover and Defender brands, aiming to broaden the appeal of a luxury off-road icon.

First Spy Shots Reveal Size and Design

Recent testing reveals that the ‘Little G’ will be significantly smaller than existing G-Class models, particularly in height. Autocar’s spy photographers captured camouflaged prototypes alongside the EQS SUV, confirming its more compact dimensions. The standard G-Class stands at 1969mm tall, while the prototype suggests a height closer to the EQS SUV’s 1718mm.

Despite its reduced size, the ‘Little G’ retains the signature blocky design elements that define the G-Class, including the classic three-window configuration and the exterior-mounted spare wheel. Subtle changes in lighting signatures will distinguish it from its larger siblings on the road.

Why This Matters: Expanding Luxury Off-Road Appeal

Mercedes’ decision to introduce a smaller G-Class addresses a growing segment of luxury SUV buyers who want the rugged aesthetic and brand recognition without the full size or price tag of the traditional model. This strategy directly competes with JLR’s upcoming Defender Sport, positioning the ‘Little G’ as a premium entry-level option.

Unique Architecture for Authenticity

According to former Mercedes-Benz tech boss Markus Schäfer, the ‘Little G’ will be built on a completely new architecture. This decision ensures that the vehicle maintains the authentic G-Class experience, avoiding compromises that would result from adapting an existing platform. The goal is to deliver a vehicle that feels true to the G-Class heritage despite its smaller footprint.

The ‘Little G’ is not simply a scaled-down version; it’s a deliberate expansion of the G-Class identity into a new, more accessible segment. Mercedes is betting that this strategy will further solidify the brand’s dominance in the high-end off-road market.
