MG has unveiled the 4X, a new electric crossover for the Chinese market featuring advanced semi-solid-state batteries. While details remain limited, this move signals a shift towards improved battery technology – though real-world range benefits are still unclear.
Battery Tech and Range Claims
The MG 4X boasts a claimed range of 317 miles (510 km) under China’s CLTC testing standards. This is competitive, but falls slightly short compared to rivals like the Kia EV3 and Cupra Born, which achieve over 350 miles (563 km) on Europe’s stricter WLTP cycle. The advantage of semi-solid-state batteries lies in potential weight reduction and faster charging speeds, though these benefits aren’t yet fully quantified in real-world use.
MG claims the new battery has passed rigorous testing, including “three-direction needle penetration tests,” and offers better performance in cold weather compared to its current models. This suggests improved safety and reliability in extreme conditions, a crucial factor for EV adoption in colder climates.
Design and Shared Components
The MG 4X’s design borrows heavily from the existing MGS5 crossover, sharing body panels and rear lights. The main visual distinction is a redesigned front end with new headlights and a bumper that avoids the aggressive styling of other recent MG models like the Cyberster. This approach suggests cost-efficiency and rapid development by leveraging existing platforms.
UK Availability Uncertain
MG has not yet confirmed whether the 4X will be sold in the UK. However, given the company’s pattern of first launching new models in China before global releases, a European rollout is possible. The MG4 Urban followed a similar path, appearing in China months before its UK debut.
The MG 4X represents an incremental step forward in electric vehicle technology, but the true impact of semi-solid-state batteries will depend on real-world performance and wider availability. The shared components and competitive pricing suggest MG aims to make advanced tech accessible, but the range remains a key area to watch as the market evolves.
