MG ZS Gets More Affordable with New Base Model

MG has expanded its ZS small SUV lineup with a new, lower-priced base model for 2026, making it more accessible to budget-conscious buyers. The move comes after the ZS lost its title as Australia’s best-selling small SUV in 2025 to the Hyundai Kona, signaling increased competition in the segment.

Price Cut and Engine Options

The new entry-level variant, dubbed the “Vibe,” starts at $22,990 drive-away, a $2,000 reduction from previous base models. It’s powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 81kW of power and 140Nm of torque. MG has simplified the range, now offering the Vibe alongside turbocharged 1.5L and 1.5L hybrid versions.

What You Get with the Vibe

Despite being the entry-level trim, the Vibe comes standard with a surprising amount of tech:

  • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Autonomous emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear parking sensors and camera

However, it does lack features found in higher trims, such as climate control and LED headlights. The Vibe also features a traditional gear shifter and a polyurethane steering wheel.

Why the Change Matters

This price cut is a direct response to increased competition from rivals like the Hyundai Kona, Chery Tiggo 4, and GWM Haval Jolion, all of which have been gaining market share in the small SUV segment. The ZS had dominated sales for four years straight, but pressure from competitors forced MG to adjust its strategy.

The Vibe’s engine, while less powerful than the turbo variant, requires only 91-octane fuel, a cost-saving factor for many consumers. The shift from a four-speed auto to a CVT transmission also improves fuel economy, achieving 6.7L/100km combined.

Recent Sales Trends

In 2025, the Hyundai Kona outsold the MG ZS with 22,769 units versus 20,000 ZS crossovers. The Chery Tiggo 4 came in close behind at 20,149 sales, and the GWM Haval Jolion with 19,413. These figures demonstrate a crowded market where value and features are key differentiators.

MG’s move with the Vibe is a calculated attempt to regain its competitive edge by appealing to price-sensitive buyers. The “celebration offer” pricing is temporary, ending February 28, 2026, suggesting the company may further adjust its lineup based on market response.

The introduction of the Vibe is a return to the ZS’ roots, offering a budget-friendly option with modern safety features, though it acknowledges that buyers seeking premium features will need to upgrade to higher trims.
