Nissan Prepares Rugged Patrol Pro-4X for Australian Off-Roaders

Nissan has given Australians a sneak peek at its upcoming off-road focused Patrol Pro-4X, catching it under wraps during testing in Melbourne. Despite the camouflage, distinctive features like the Pro-4X’s signature grille and robust front skid plates give away its identity. The test mule, an early example of the next-generation Y63 Patrol (expected to launch Down Under in late 2026), boasts a commanding presence with its lifted suspension, hinting at substantial ground clearance.

The Pro-4X trim level is renowned for its serious off-road capability. While details haven’t been officially confirmed, it’s likely this model will offer the maximum possible ground clearance of around 244mm when its air suspension reaches its highest setting. Expect a commanding approach angle, designed to clear obstacles at entry points, exceeding 33 degrees, a departure angle surpassing 24.5 degrees (for easier climbing over obstructions), and a breakover angle of approximately 25.5 degrees, crucial for navigating challenging mid-section ascents or descents.

Visually, the Pro-4X sets itself apart with chunky 20-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in aggressive 275/60R20 all-terrain tires and a handy electronic locking rear differential to enhance traction when things get slippery.

Underneath the hood lies Nissan’s potent 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine, generating an impressive 317kW of power and 700Nm of torque. This powerhouse is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, seamlessly sending all that grunt to all four wheels.

Nissan confirms that the entire Patrol lineup for Australia will be tailored specifically for local conditions during testing phases. While details about the specific Australian trim levels remain under wraps, expect the Pro-4X to become part of the expanded range.

The arrival of the next generation Patrol promises a more refined and capable off-roader than its predecessor. Nissan boasts improvements in dimensions – it’s now 35mm longer and wider compared to the outgoing model – as well as a significant strengthening of its ladder-frame chassis, boasting 25% greater torsional rigidity and 57% increased lateral stiffness. This enhanced structure suggests even more robust off-road performance is on the horizon.

The hardcore off-road focused Patrol Warrior variant, a product of Nissan’s local partnership with Premcar, is also expected to be based on this Pro-4X platform, further solidifying its position as the ultimate Aussie bush basher.
