Kia is preparing to launch the next generation of its Seltos compact SUV, with a full unveiling scheduled for December 10th. The new model blends traditional SUV styling with modern design cues from Kia’s electric vehicle lineup, offering a petrol-powered alternative to the EV3.
Design and Positioning
The Seltos’ design draws inspiration from models like the Sportage and EV9, featuring Kia’s signature ‘Star Map’ daytime running lights and a sleek, aerodynamic profile. The exterior incorporates elements like flush-fitting door handles, silver bumper detailing, and rugged wheel arch cladding.
Kia intends for the Seltos to fill a gap in its lineup, positioning it above the Stonic and potentially alongside the Niro, though the exact UK market strategy remains unclear. The vehicle will be offered in trims like the off-road focused X-Line and the sporty GT-Line, with variations in bumpers and wheel choices.
Powertrain and Platform
The second-generation Seltos will be built on Kia’s K3 platform, which it shares with models like the Hyundai Kona and Kia Niro. While the previous Seltos ran on a limited petrol/diesel K2 platform, the new version will feature a range of hybrid petrol engines paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic or potentially a six-speed manual transmission.
Market Ambition and Competition
Kia describes the Seltos as part of a broader “global ambition” to expand its crossover offerings. The vehicle will compete directly with rivals like the Volkswagen T-Roc and MINI Countryman, offering consumers a choice in the compact SUV segment.
The Seltos’ launch highlights the continued demand for combustion-engine vehicles alongside Kia’s growing EV lineup. This strategy allows Kia to cater to a wider range of buyers while maintaining its competitive edge in the global automotive market.
The new Seltos represents a strategic move for Kia, balancing the transition to electric vehicles with the ongoing popularity of petrol-powered options. This ensures the brand remains accessible to diverse consumer preferences.
