The last vehicle developed independently by the Bovensiepen family’s Alpina, a limited-edition XB7 luxury SUV, will be unveiled this Friday. This marks the end of a 60-year run for the famed German automaker before its full integration into BMW.
A Legacy Concludes
The XB7 special edition is specifically intended for the United States and Canadian markets. Though Alpina is now under BMW ownership as of January 1, 2024, this final model was engineered before the acquisition. The deal to produce it was finalized while the Bovensiepen family still led the company.
This launch follows Alpina’s previous standalone release: the B8 GT saloon unveiled in January 2025. Following this, all future Alpinas will be developed entirely under BMW’s direction, including new branding revealed last month.
From Tuning to Independence
Founded in 1965 by Burkard Bovensiepen, Alpina began as a BMW tuner but operated as an independent manufacturer with factory-backed warranties. The company gained recognition for its uniquely styled, high-performance vehicles, such as the B3 and D3 based on the 3 Series.
Why Sell Now?
The Bovensiepen family sold Alpina to BMW in 2022 because they felt maintaining their uncompromising standards was unsustainable in the emerging electric vehicle era. The family argued that differentiating future electric Alpinas from standard BMW models through custom software would be prohibitively expensive.
BMW’s Vision for Alpina
BMW acquired Alpina to broaden its luxury car offerings, aiming to position the brand as a high-performance competitor to Mercedes-Benz’s Maybach line. The company has already appointed Max Missoni, previously with Polestar, to oversee Alpina’s design direction, promising “bespoke options” for discerning customers.
This marks not just the end of an independent brand, but a shift in strategy for BMW to capture a higher segment of the luxury performance market.
The final XB7 represents a closing chapter in automotive history, signaling a transition from a family-run legacy to a corporate future.
