Seres has unveiled the updated Landian E5 Plus, a mid-size SUV positioned as a budget-friendly alternative to its more premium Aito line (developed in collaboration with Huawei). The E5 Plus starts at 119,800 yuan ($16,800 USD) – roughly half the price of comparable Aito models – and boasts a notable 230km pure electric range.
Design and Exterior Updates
The 2024 Landian E5 Plus features a redesigned front end with a distinctive “star-ring” light bar and a closed grille. Side improvements include new wheel designs and chrome accents, while the rear mirrors the modern look with a full-width taillight. The vehicle is available in a new “Jinghai Sand” exterior color, with an optional outdoor camping kit.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the E5 Plus offers a streamlined cabin with a 15.6-inch floating touchscreen, a full LCD instrument cluster, and an electric sunroof. A key upgrade is the integration of Doubao’s large AI model, which promises enhanced in-car interaction and computing power.
The vehicle also includes new driver-assistance features, such as automatic parking and lane change assist, along with a second-row screen paired with a Dolby sound system.
Powertrain and Performance
The Landian E5 Plus is powered by Seres’ Super Electric Hybrid System, combining a 1.5L engine (70 kW) with a 160 kW (215 hp) electric motor. An intelligent all-time four-wheel drive system is also available. The suspension utilizes FSD adaptive technology, automatically adjusting stiffness for improved ride comfort. The vehicle measures 4760 mm in length, 1865 mm in width, and 1710 mm in height.
Context: Why This Matters
Seres’ Aito models, co-developed with Huawei, currently dominate the company’s NEV sales. In November 2023, Aito vehicles accounted for 51,677 of Seres’ 55,203 total NEV sales. This highlights Huawei’s critical role in driving Seres’ success.
The Landian E5 Plus, while significantly cheaper, has yet to achieve comparable sales figures. This suggests Seres is betting on affordability to expand its market share beyond Huawei-dependent consumers – a segment that may prioritize cost savings over the premium features found in the Aito line. The success of this strategy will determine whether Seres can diversify its revenue streams.
The Landian E5 Plus represents Seres’ attempt to broaden its appeal by offering a competitive, lower-cost option in the increasingly crowded NEV market.
