Skoda Superb PHEV Gets Power Boost: Faster, But Not The Fastest

Skoda has updated its top-tier Superb model with a more powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain, increasing combined output to 268 horsepower. The upgrade is available exclusively on Hatchback versions in Sportline and Laurin & Klement trims, leaving the Combi (estate) version out of the equation. This move reshuffles the Superb lineup, giving the electrified option a stronger position among available engine choices.

Performance Gains and Specifications

The new powertrain delivers 268 hp (200 kW / 272 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. This translates to a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph (225 km/h). Compared to the standard PHEV, this represents a full second improvement in acceleration and a 3 mph increase in top speed.

The boost comes from software tweaks to the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, now producing 174 hp (130 kW / 177 PS) on its own, combined with a 114 hp (95 kW / 116 PS) electric motor powered by a 25.7 kWh battery. Power is delivered via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to the front wheels.

Skoda has also upgraded the braking system, fitting larger 12.2-inch (310 mm) ventilated discs at the rear, thicker than the 11.8-inch (300 mm) standard discs. This ensures improved stopping power commensurate with the increased performance.

Trim Levels and Driving Experience

The Sportline trim offers a subtly sportier aesthetic with black accents, 19-inch wheels, and a suspension lowered by 0.6 inches (15 mm). For drivers prioritizing handling, this is the more engaging choice.

The Laurin & Klement trim focuses on comfort, featuring chrome accents, premium wheels, leather upholstery, a Canton audio system, and standard Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive suspension.

Context and Limitations

While the new PHEV is now the most powerful combustion-engine Skoda in the current lineup, it doesn’t reclaim the title of fastest Superb. The previous-generation model with the 2.0 TSI engine produced 276 hp (206 kW / 280 PS). More importantly, the front-wheel-drive layout and added weight mean it cannot match the all-wheel-drive 261 hp (195 kW / 265 PS) Superb 2.0 TSI 4×4, which accelerates from 0-62 mph in just 5.6 seconds.

Skoda has demonstrated further performance potential through one-off projects. A 2024 “Sleeper Edition” built by Skoda UK and RE Performance delivered 470 horsepower and 661 Nm of torque, proving the Superb platform can handle significant upgrades. However, such builds remain exclusive and are not available for public sale.

The Superb has yet to receive a factory-produced RS performance trim, leaving enthusiasts to explore aftermarket modifications or wait for potential future developments. Despite the upgrades, the current PHEV remains a step below the Superb’s maximum performance potential.
