Volvo EX30 Cargo: A Surprisingly Fast Delivery Van

Volvo has quietly launched its first commercial vehicle, the EX30 Cargo, by transforming its smallest SUV into a work-ready van. The conversion, developed by Volvo’s UK division, aims to deliver a compact, high-performance solution for urban parcel delivery.

From SUV to Utility Vehicle

At first glance, the EX30 Cargo looks identical to the standard EX30, except for the darkened rear windows. Volvo even offers it in a rugged “Cross Country” trim, adding extra ground clearance for deliveries on less-than-perfect roads. The real change happens behind the driver and passenger seats: the rear bench is gone, replaced by a flat load floor and reinforced interior paneling designed to withstand daily wear and tear.

The transformation increases cargo capacity from 318 liters (11.2 cu ft) in the passenger version to 1,000 liters (35.3 cu ft). A bulkhead separates the cargo area, while wider-opening rear doors and an underfloor subframe with mounting points add to the vehicle’s practicality. Payload capacity is rated at 390 kg (860 lbs).

Performance and Features

Despite its utilitarian purpose, the EX30 Cargo retains the performance, safety, and technology of the standard model. It comes in two trims:

  • Cargo Core: Includes automatic LED headlights, 18-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, a rearview camera, and wireless smartphone integration.
  • Cargo Plus: Adds 19-inch wheels, a black roof, heated seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a wireless charging pad, Volvo’s Pilot Assist driver assistance system, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.

The EX30 Cargo offers two powertrain options: a single-motor 148 hp (110 kW) version and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive flagship delivering a rapid 422 hp (315 kW). The latter can sprint from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in just 3.6 seconds — making it one of the quickest delivery vans on the market.

Limited Availability

Currently, the EX30 Cargo is available exclusively through Volvo UK’s fleet sales channels, meaning private buyers cannot purchase it directly. Pricing starts at £36,010 ($48,200), a £2,950 ($3,900) premium over the base passenger version. Expansion to other markets appears unlikely at this time.

The EX30 Cargo represents a niche but intriguing move for Volvo, blending the practicality of a commercial vehicle with the performance and style of its electric SUV lineup. While limited to fleet buyers in the UK, it demonstrates Volvo’s willingness to explore unconventional uses for its existing platforms.
