Mercedes-Benz has launched the locally-manufactured CLA EV in China, marking the brand’s commitment to the rapidly growing electric vehicle market. Priced from 249,000 yuan (approximately $34,900 USD), the CLA EV is built on the new Modular Architecture (MMA) platform and caters to the demand for stylish, compact electric vehicles in the region. Notably, the Chinese variant offers a longer wheelbase compared to the global version, designed to enhance passenger comfort.
Design and Exterior Features
The CLA EV showcases a modern and sporty aesthetic, with a distinctive blacked-out front panel integrating the iconic “Three-Pointed Star” emblem within a matrix-style grille. A full-width LED light strip seamlessly connects the headlights, which incorporate star-shaped design elements. Higher-tier models further elevate the exterior with AMG-style body components. Customers can choose from five exterior colors: Obsidian Black, Water Moon Silver, Lava Red, Pine Mist Blue, and Arctic White.
At the rear, the vehicle boasts a ducktail spoiler, full-width taillights arranged in a “Three-Pointed Star” pattern, and an upward-flipping rearview camera integrated within the central emblem. Key dimensions include a length of 4,763 mm, a width of 1,836 mm, a height of 1,471 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,830 mm.
Interior and Technology
Stepping inside, the CLA EV presents a departure from the design language of its combustion engine counterpart. The dashboard features a sleek 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster complemented by a large 14-inch central touchscreen. Premium trims add a second 14-inch display for the passenger. The interior incorporates a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel and column-mounted shifter, while retaining several physical buttons for user convenience.
Key interior features include a head-up display (HUD), wireless smartphone charging, and multi-zone ambient lighting with a palette of 64 colors.
The vehicle runs on the advanced MB.OS operating system, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 hardware. This platform enables immersive MBUX navigation, sophisticated 3D graphics, an AI-assisted virtual assistant, multi-zone voice interaction, and full-scene interruption capabilities, ensuring a connected and intuitive driving experience.
Performance and Range
The CLA EV utilizes an 800V electric architecture and features a robust powertrain capable of delivering a maximum motor output of 200 kW. A two-speed transmission enhances efficiency and performance. The CLTC-rated range for the standard model is an impressive 866 km per charge, making it suitable for both daily commutes and longer journeys. A lower-powered variant with 165 kW has also been submitted for approval.
Chinese-Specific Adaptations
The Chinese long-wheelbase CLA differentiates itself from the global version through several key adaptations. The increased wheelbase provides enhanced rear legroom, catering to the preferences of Chinese consumers. Furthermore, the model incorporates a simplified lower grille design, a locally integrated Momenta-based Urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) system, and an AI voice assistant co-developed with ByteDance, reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s localization strategy.
Safety and Standards
Mercedes-Benz prioritizes safety across both domestic and international models. The CLA EV includes Pre-Safe 3.0, emergency stop functions (EESF), 11 airbags, a robust construction using high-strength steel and aluminum, and multi-level high-voltage battery safety features. Both variants also meet China’s stringent 2026 EV fire safety standards, underscoring Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to vehicle safety and regulatory compliance.
The launch of the CLA EV in China highlights Mercedes-Benz’s strategic focus on the electric vehicle market and its ability to tailor products to meet the specific needs and preferences of Chinese consumers, combining a stylish design with advanced technology and enhanced comfort.
