VW Kills Its Last Stick Shift

The 2027 model year just dropped and VW had news.

Big stuff mostly. The ID. Buzz is back, wearing a bed this time. A fresh Atlas Cross Sport is coming soon.

But look closer. Something vanished.

The 2027 Jetta comes with only one transmission choice. Automatic. The six-speed manual? Dead. Gone. It was the last stand for VW stick shifts in the States, and it just folded.

Dealer guides flagged it. TFLcar got confirmation.

The rep admitted they really tried. They liked the manual too, supposedly. They fought to keep it for that small, passionate crew who actually knows how to shift gears themselves.

Did they want it gone? Probably not. But demand dried up. Global buyers don’t want to shift. The math didn’t work out anymore. Tough call, they said.

Now the Jetta sits behind a seven-speed DSG.

The engine stays the same. It’s a 2.0L turbo four making 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Enough zing, sure, but none of the engagement purists craved.

Is it over now?

For VW in America, yes. The manual is dead.

Meanwhile, the rest of the lineup got shiny upgrades. The S and Sport trims grabbed better sound systems. Keyless entry. Push-to-start. All Jettas now nag you harder if your kids don’t buckle up.

Convenient? Maybe.

Exciting?

Global demand narrowed until it couldn’t sustain the legacy.

So much for the dream of the daily driver with teeth.

We’ll have to see if this triggers a cascade elsewhere or if this was just VW bowing out. No closure here really, just an empty slot where a shifter used to be.
