Why All-Wheel Drive Doesn’t Stop Your Car in Snow

Snow hits the pavement. Tires lose their bite. Cars slide into ditches. It is a familiar nightmare for anyone who has driven in winter. When a vehicle slips, the best outcome is usually just a few dings on the bumper. A catastrophic pile-up is what everyone fears.

How AWD Systems Actually Work

To answer that, you have to look under the hood. All-wheel drive (AWD) is not magic. It is a mechanical system that distributes engine power to the wheels with the most traction.

Traction is friction. It is the grip between rubber and road.

Good snow tires. Always.

Snow tires are designed with specialized rubber compounds that stay flexible in freezing temperatures. They have deeper treads to bite into snow and ice. They provide the actual traction that stops and starts the vehicle.

AWD helps you move. Snow tires help you stop.

You need both. Or better yet, you need a careful driver who knows that no drivetrain can defy physics. A skilled driver in a two-wheel-drive car with proper winter tires will outperform an arrogant driver in an AWD sedan every time.

The next time you see a commercial showing a car conquering a blizzard, remember this: the tires are doing the heavy lifting, not the drivetrain.
