We all know that feeling. You are in a hardware store. You have a small hatchback car. Attach the tiles to the back. After driving a few boxes, the rear bumper hit the asphalt. Front sags. This is obvious. The rear suspension is overloaded.
Your small cars aren’t built for that much weight.
Maybe you have an SUV or a pickup truck. Of course you need more tiless to make these trucks. Designed to carry more stuff. But if you push it far enough, you’ll still see the rear drop out.
Now imagine a motorhome. Install these same tiles boxes on a large Class A motorhome. You won’t notice. If you don’t really look inside, you don’t know how heavy it is. Large Motorhomes are designed to carry a lot of payload. The suspension has little to complain about, even with furniture, appliances, a TV and a room full of people.
But here’s the problem. How do you know when you’ve crossed the line? When does “traveling fully loaded” become “dangerously overloaded”?
Simply put, it’s cargo carrying capacity.
The long answer requires a bit of math. You need to know some specific definitions. All that remains is the calculation.
“Never exceed the RV CCC. Consider this a hard limit recommendation for your safety.”
Calculations behind cargo capacity
To determine Cargo Capacity, start with the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR). The number is printed on a sticker inside the door frame. This is the maximum total mass that the manufacturer claims the vehicle can safely carry.
Subtract from this everything that is already in the vehicle.
Here’s a breakdown with a hypothetical example:
-
Start with GVWR : Let’s say your RV weighs 20,000 lbs.
-
Minus Unladen Weight (UVW) : This is the weight of the caravan as manufactured by the manufacturer. Fully filled with fuel, coolant and oil. This “excludes” cargo, passengers and fresh water.
-
UVW Example : 14,500 lbs.
-
Reduce Sleeping Capacity Weight Rating (SCWR) : This is the maximum weight a person can weigh. The formula is simple. 154 lbs per sleeping position.
-
Example : 6 berth x 154 lbs = 924 lbs.
-
Subtract weight of propane : LPG weighs 4.2 pounds per gallon.
-
Example : A 12 gallon tank weighs 50.4 lbs.
-
Minus the weight of fresh water : Water weighs 8.3 pounds per gallon.
- Example : A 25 gallon fresh water tank weighs 207.5 lbs.
Now let’s calculate:
20,000 (total vehicle weight)
– 14,500 (UVW)
– 924 (SCWR)
– 50.4 (LPG)
– 207.5 (fresh water)
= £4,318.1
This 4,318.1 pounds is the cargo carrying capacity.
This is the maximum weight that can be added. This includes your hand luggage, equipment, food, pets and other non-essential water. Exceeding this figure exceeds the manufacturer’s safety limits. There is a risk of flat tires, broken brakes and damage to the suspension.
Where to find technical data
If you want to know the exact CCC, you have two options.
Let’s ask the manufacturer first. They have the information.
Second, search online. Most major manufacturers post GVWR, UVW and other specifications online. These numbers can be found by searching for a specific model year and trim.
There are also third-party resources. Some charts have cargo capacity by make and model. These are usually in cubic feet and can help you plan for volume, although weight is an important safety factor.
Common technical data and capacity list of vehicles
Different vehicles have very different storage capacities. If you’re shopping for a car or truck, understanding the cargo capacity will help you plan your trip.

Audi charging capacity
Audi’s sales volumes are usually small. Q7 and A3 are more practical. R8? Not so much.

General Motors luxury car sales
Buick’s sales strategy is very simple. If you need space, buy a bigger SUV. In 2006, the Terraza carried 136.5 cubic feet of cargo, making it the largest vehicle of its time. Rendezvous is not far behind at 108.9 cubic feet? There aren’t that many of them. The LaCrosse and Lucerne only have 16 and 17 cubic feet of space, respectively. It’s barely big enough for a golf bag and a few clubs.
When Rainier arrived, it brought 80.1 cubic feet of capacity to the party. It’s a mid-size SUV with individuality. As of 2007, Buick discontinued the Rendezvous and Terraza and replaced them with the Enclave. For 2008, the Enclave offers 116.2 cubic feet of space. In 2009 it dropped a bit to 115, but still not bad. But the sedans 16 cubic feet and 17 cubic feet. Nothing new there. Loading a Buick sedan can be a pain.
Cadillac takes a different tack. Luxury doesn’t necessarily mean space, but it often means scale. Escalade is king. In 2006, the standard cargo is 104.6 cubic feet. By 2007, the figure had risen to 108.9 cubic feet. The revised ESV version is a real monster. It started at 131.6 in 2006 and rose to 137.4 in 2007. The number remained stable in 2009.
Sedans are small. The CTS has a capacity of 12.5 cubic feet. There is no extra luggage space in the V8. DTS is a bit more generous on 18.8. The numbers of STS and STS-V are the same: 13.8. XLR is a roadster. The area is 11.6 cubic feet. Not suitable for beach accessories.
Chevrolet is the sales leader. Simple and clear. This express van is like a brick on wheels and has 225.1 cubic feet of space. From 2006 to 2009, nothing changed. If you need to move your inventory, this is the best option for you. Silverado truck? There are no numbers. GM just hasn’t released them in years.
In crossovers and SUVs, the Suburban is the benchmark. As of 2007, its capacity is 137.4 cubic feet. Tahoe is a small 108.9. The TrailBlazer sit in the middle of the pack with an 80.1 rating. The HHR is a retro-style hatchback. In 2006, it had a capacity of 63.1 cubic feet. Then it dropped to 57.7 cubic feet. The panel version is still 62.7.
The Malibu MAXX is a strange outlier. In 2006, it had a capacity of 41 cubic feet. The standard Malibu has a capacity of 15.4 cubic feet. The Traverse was introduced in 2009 and has a capacity of 117.5 cubic feet. Something big.
Chrysler and Dodge Utilities
Chrysler is strong in the minivan segment. Town & Country is the market leader. In 2006, it was 146.7 cubic feet. It dropped slightly to 144 cubic feet in 2007 and 143.8 cubic feet in 2008 and 2009. Still huge. The PT Cruiser is quirky but functional. In 2006, it had a capacity of 92.2 cubic feet. Then in 2007 it dropped to 62.7 cubic feet and stayed there. Pacifica started at 62.7 and rose to 92.2 in 2007. Then it dropped again.
Sedans are small. The 300 and 300C have a capacity of 15.6 cubic feet. In 2008, it rose to 17.2, but then fell back to 15.6. Sebring is smaller 11.3 and 13.6. The Aspen SUV has 102.4 cubic feet of space. It hasn’t changed. The same goes for the Aspen Hybrid.
Dodge took control of the minivan market with the Grand Caravan. In 2006 and 2007, it offered 167.9 cubic feet, dropping to 144.3 in 2008 and 2009. The R/V has a similar capacity of 142.3. Sprinter vans are a huge industry. In 2006, 2500 trucks had a capacity of 321 cubic feet. Then it dropped to 141.3 cubic feet. In 2006, the van’s seating capacity increased to 247 seats, followed by 318 and 371 seats in the 3500 model.
This truck does not have a standard model number published. The Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 all sat in the 41 cubic foot levels for several years. Dakota is not numbered. The Durango has a capacity of 102.4 cubic feet. It hasn’t changed. Nitro is estimated to be 75.6. Magnum is a muscle car. It is 71.6. The Charger and Challenger share 16.2 cubic feet. Ram trucks are small. In 2006 it was 6.8, then 8.4 and then 8.9.
Why are these numbers important? Compare the 2009 Grand Caravan’s 144.3 cubic feet to the Suburban’s 137.4 cubic feet. Or watch the Express van’s 225.1 capacity trump everything else. These are not just statistics. These are proofs of what each brand thinks you should be carrying.
Ford cargo capacity
The numbers don’t lie. If you’re looking for hauling space in the 2006 Ford lineup, the E-Series van is the way to go. The E-150, E-250 and E-350 Super Duty models boast a whopping 256.5 cubic feet of capacity. It’s not just about trunk space. It was a small apartment on wheels. An F-series truck? For rear cargo it is less important. The F-150 offers a respectable 37.8 cubic feet, while the heavier F-250 and F-350 are listed here without capacity. This is probably because the bed specifications vary depending on the cab configuration.
Compact markets are still in their infancy. The Escape has 66.3 cubic feet (seats folded). The Escape Hybrid received a rating of 65.5 cubic feet. If you need family-sized hauling space without the footprint of a truck, the 85.8 cubic feet Explorer is the way to go. 13 cubic feet4.3 cubic feet The Freestar minivan sits somewhere between a sedan and a van.
By 2007, Ford added the Edge. Bring 69.6 cubic feet of space to your party. The Expedition EL expands the legend to 13 cubic feet0.8 cubic feet. The Ranger disappeared from the list entirely for a few years, but reappeared in 2008 with a modest 18.1 cubic feet. The GT is a rare supercar that is only 1 cubic foot. It’s built for speed, not groceries.
The truck’s carrying capacity has been slightly reduced for the 2008 model year. The E-Series has a capacity of 230.6 cubic feet. The Focus disappeared from the cargo list in 2008, but returned in 2009 with a cramped 13 cubic feet.8 cubic feet. The Fusion is still small at 15.8 cubic feet. Introduced in 2008, the Taurus X filled the gap between the Explorer and the Flex with 85.5 cubic feet.
In 2009, the 83.2 cubic feet Flex joins the lineup. The Escape Hybrid rises slightly to 66.1 cubic feet. The Passport rose 108.3 cubic feet. The focus remains small. The Mustang is still small at just 9.7 cubic feet. If you need room in a Ford of this era, you can buy a minivan or a large SUV.

GMC cargo capacity
GMC plays in the same sandbox as Chevrolet, but with a different badge. Savana Van is a workhorse. From 2006 to 2009, the Savana 1500, 2500 and 3500 held steady at 225.1 cubic feet. Consistency. Reliability. Vacancy.
The SUV segment is even more tense. The Yukon started out with 63.6 cubic feet in 2006, dropping slightly to 60.3 cubic feet in 2007 and staying there until 2009. In some years, the Yukon XL had less room than the full-size Yukon. No, wait. XL was launched in 2006 at a price of 45.7 cubic feet and in subsequent years 45.8 cubic feet. This may be a measurement error in the data source, but the XL is physically longer. The difference is in the measurement method. In general, the XL has a larger overall volume. The numbers here suggest that the Yukon’s standard measurements include more folding seat configurations and a variety ofbaseline.
The Acadia arrived in 2007 with 19.7 cubic feet. By 2008, the number had risen to 25.5 cubic feet. From 2006 to 2009 Envoy was a solid 43.7 cubic feet. The Sierra truck had zero cargo capacity, further proving that bed size is separate from cab specs. Introduced in 2008, the Yukon Hybrid measures just 16.9 cubic feet. Battery packs take up space.

Honda cargo capacity
Honda has a strange habit. The Civic Sedan’s volume was 72 cubic feet in 2006 and 2007. Unless you count the rear seats that fold a certain way or the unusual trunk, that figure doesn’t fit the logic of a compact car. The Accord is much more practical, about 12.8-14 cubic feet.
The CR-V is consistent. 10.4 cubic feet. It’s small by modern compact SUV standards, but powerful. The element is a box on wheels. It was possible to deliver 74.6 cubic feet annually. Practicality is the only goal.
From 2006 to 2009, the Ridgeline truck bed capacity was 41.4 cubic feet. The Odyssey minivan is a beast. 147.4 cubic feet in all years. It hasn’t changed. It worked.
The Pilot started in 2006 and 2007 with 87 cubic feet.6 cubic feet cubic feet, which dropped slightly to 87 cubic feet.6 cubic feet cubic feet in 2008 and 87 cubic feet in 2009. The changes are negligible. The Fit debuted in 2007 with 41.9 cubic feet and grew to 57.3 cubic feet in 2009. Both the Insight and the S2000 are small. The S2000 offers 5 cubic feet. sports car. Hummer’s load capacity
Hummer doesn’t care about aerodynamics. They value intimidation and utility. From 2006 to 2009, the H2 had a capacity of 30.7 cubic feet. It is a luxury SUV disguised as a military vehicle. The H3 is slightly smaller at 29.5 cubic feet.
The H3T is a pickup version and no payload is listed. Probably because the beds are different sizes and there is little space in the cabin. By 2009, the Hummer brand was on the verge of extinction, but its numbers remained unchanged. There are no innovations in space efficiency. Only brute force can be used.

Hyundai cargo capacity
Hyundai is an affordable choice. The Accent started at 12.4 cubic feet in 2006, went up to 15.9 cubic feet in 2007 and stabilized in 2009. The Elantra went from 13 cubic feet to 14.2 cubic feet and stayed the same. Sonata held a 16.3 cubic feet during the episode.
Santa Fe rose from 30.5 cubic feet to 34.2 cubic feet. Tucson is 22.7 cubic feet. The Veracruz and i-series trucks have no capacity listed, perhaps due to limited production or tight fitment. Introduced in 2009, the Genesis measures 15.9 cubic feet cubic feet and matches the Accent. Hyundai is reducing the footprint of its sedans.

Infiniti cargo capacity
Infiniti strives to make luxury practical. From 2006 to 2008, the FX35 and FX45 both offered 64.5 cubic feet. The QX56 is a tank. 91.7 cubic feet in all years. Huge internal volume.
The G35 Sedan is small, only 7.8 cubic feet. In 2008, this value rose slightly to 13 cubic feet.5, but for the G37 it returned to 7.4. Inconsistent. M35 and M45 stabilized at 14.9. The EX35 arrives
Jeep cargo analysis
The 2006-2009 Jeep lineup shows a clear shift towards utility, especially when looking at Jeep Cargo Capacity. For those looking for utility, the Commander tops the list, ranging from 68.5 to 68.9 cubic feet depending on the year. That same year, the Grand Cherokee had slightly less room at 67.4 cubic feet.
The Liberty started strong in 2006 with a capacity of 69 cubic feet, but dropped to 64.2 cubic feet in 2008 and has remained at that level ever since. This is a significant contraction. The Patriot has held steady at 62.7 cubic feet since 2007. The Wrangler is the least stable. Its volume jumped from 45.8 cubic feet in 2006 to 61.2 cubic feet in 2007 and remained unchanged until 2009. However, the unlimited version offers more space. In 2008 and 2009, the capacity was 86.8 cubic feet. If you need a lot of space, Unlimited is the best choice.
Kia Motors sales comparison
Kia’s strategy is different. They rely on minivans and large crossovers. Sedona is king here. For 2006, it offers a whopping 141.5 cubic feet of space. In 2007 and 2008, that number dropped to 121.3 cubic feet. It was not available in 2009, probably due to model cycle changes.
Rondo offers a solid middle ground. In 2007 and 2008, its volume was 74.4 cubic feet. Introduced in 2009, the Borrego bridges the gap between the Rondo and the Sedona with 97.6 cubic feet.
That’s a small amount for a small car. The Amanti’s original capacity was 15.5 cubic feet, which was increased to 15.9 cubic feet in 2007. The Optima’s capacity is still 14.8 cubic feet. Rio’s space is a tight 11.9 cubic feet. The five-door versions of these small cars offer more space. After dropping in 2007, the Rio 5’s volume jumped to 49.6 cubic feet in 2008. The Spectra 5’s volume remains steady at 52.8 cubic feet. From 2006 to 2008, the Sportage’s capacity remained at 66.6 cubic feet. The Sorento’s capacity is also solid at 66.4 cubic feet.
Land Rover capacity data
Land Rover numerical values vary widely due to model changes. The LR3 did well in 2006 and 2007, offering 90.3 cubic feet of space. It dropped significantly in 2008 to just 9.9 cubic feet (perhaps measured with a different seating configuration or different seats), but rose to 90.3 cubic feet in 2009.
The Range Rover is smaller than the LR3. In 2006 and 2007, its capacity started at 74.9 cubic feet. In 2008, it was reduced to 35.1 cubic feet. By 2009, it had recovered slightly to 74.2 cubic feet.
Range Rover Sport is always the same. From 2006 to 2009, it had a capacity of 71 cubic feet. The LR2 was added in 2009 and has a capacity of 58.9 cubic feet. No data for 2008 LR2.
Lexus interior volume
Lexus has small luxury sedans and large SUVs. In 2006, the ES 330 has a capacity of 14.5 cubic feet. From 2007 to 2009, the capacity of the ES 350 increased slightly to 14.7 cubic feet. The GS model has a tighter transition. The GS 300, GS 430, GS 350 and GS 460 are all 12.7 cubic feet. The GS 450h is small at 7.5 cubic feet. The IS 250 and IS 350 also have a capacity of 13 cubic feet. Introduced in 2008 and 2009, the IS-F has a capacity of 13.3 cubic feet.
Luggage space are better. The LS 430 starts at 20.2 cubic feet. The LS 460 dropped to 18 cubic feet in 2007 and 2008 and stayed at 18 cubic feet in 2009. Is it on par with the S-Class? No, it’s a Mercedes. LS is Lexus. Wait. The LS 600h also offers 18 cubic feet of capacity for 2008.
Lexus competes for space in SUVs. The GX 470 offers 77.5 cubic feet of space. Introduced in 2006 and 2007, the LX 470 has a capacity of 90.4 cubic feet. Introduced in 2008, the LX 570 has a much smaller trunk at 15.5 cubic feet, but that likely refers to the third row behind. The 2009 LX 570 measures 83.1 cubic feet and displays various dimensions or folded configurations.
The RX model remains consistent. The RX 330 and RX 400h offer 84.7 cubic feet. In 2007 and 2009, the RX 350’s space was slightly improved to 85 cubic feet. Back in 2008, the RX 350 only had 38.3 cubic feet of space, but that’s likely to have been significantly reduced thanks to the raised rear seats. The SC 430 Coupe has always been small at just 8.8 cubic feet.
Lincoln cargo capacity
Lincoln specializes in large cars. Navigators are large SUVs. It started in 2006 at 104.8 cubic feet, dropped to 103.5 cubic feet in 2007 and 2008, and increased slightly in 2009 to 104.7 cubic feet.
From 2006 to 2008, the Mark LT pickup truck always had a capacity of 47.9 cubic feet. The MKX arrived in 2007 with 69 cubic feet and kept that number until 2009.
The sedan is ordinary. As of 2006, the LS offers 13.5 cubic feet. The 2006-2009 Town Car offered 21.1 cubic feet. The 2007-2009 MKZ offered 15.8 cubic feet. The Zephyr 2006 has a volume of 15.8 cubic feet. The Montego produced 21 cubic feet in 2006, 21.2 cubic feet in 2007 and 2009. The MKS was introduced in 2009 and has a capacity of 18.7 cubic feet.
Cargo capacity of Mazda
Mazda has a versatile selection. The MPV minivan is huge, offering 127 cubic feet for 2006. The Tribute crossover began offering 66.8 cubic feet in 2006, dropped to 29.2 cubic feet in 2008, and returned to 66.2 cubic feet in 2009. The Tribute Hybrid 27 is 8.8 cubic feet smaller.
The CX-9 is a large SUV option. From 2007 to 2009, it offered 100.7 cubic feet of space. Introduced in 2007, the CX-7 offers 58.6 cubic feet of space, and it’s still there.
Sedans vary. The Mazda6 offered 58.7 cubic feet of space in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2009, that dropped to 16.6 cubic feet, likely due to seats. The capacity of the Mazda3 increased from 31.2 cubic feet in 2006 to 43.8 cubic feet in 2007 and remained there until 2009. The Mazda5’s capacity remains flat at 44.4 cubic feet.
Sports cars are tough. The MX-5’s volume remains at 5.3 cubic feet. The 2006, 2007 and 2008 RX-8 has a capacity of 7.6 cubic feet. The 2007 and 2008 MazdaSpeed3 has the same 43.4 cubic feet as the Mazda3. The MazdaSpeed6 has a small capacity of 12.4 cubic feet. No information on B-series trucks.
Mercedes Benz trunk
Mercedes-Benz models tend to be conservative when it comes to cargo space. The C-Class originally had 12.2 cubic feet of space, and later grew to 12.4 cubic feet.
Saturn practical game
Saturn is trying to create a niche with volume in mind. The 2006 Saturn Relay minivan has 26.9 feet of cargo space. Not bad for a moving company. Then there’s the 2007 Saturn VUE. With the rear seats folded down, it’s 63.8 feet. The hybrid version is perfect for this. A great option for families who need space.
Saturn Outlook 2007 is shocking. 115.9 feet of space. That was huge for a crossover at the time. Stable 2008. But in 2009 there were surgeries. VUE decreased to 29.2 feet. The VUE Hybrid follows close behind, settling at 29.2 feet. The Aura and Aura Hybrid stabilize at 14.9 feet and 13.1 feet. Sky Sports car? Only 5.4 feet**. small. It is not originally intended for carrying luggage.
“Saturn prioritizes sales over VUE and all other Outlook series.”
Scion’s modular approach
Scion knows that young buyers want flexibility. The 2006 Scion xA starts at 32.8 feet. xB is even bigger at 43.4 feet. As of 2007, the tC coupe has a ride height of 12.8 feet. Continuous. Continuous.
Then 2008 changed things. With the seats folded, the xB jumps to 69.9 feet. xD Approached 35.7 ft³. This trend continued until 2009. xB and xD contain these numbers. tC is stuck at 12.8 feet. If you need more space, buy a stroller. If you want style, you have to compromise.
Smart has a small footprint
Smart does not produce volume. They ran city traffic. The 2008 Smart Fortwo is only available in 12 feet. that’s it. car. There are two doors. minimal space. Sending food in bulk has never been a problem. Information about parking in phone booths is as follows:
Subaru’s all-weather utility
Subaru belongs to the station wagon and SUV group. The 2006 Subaru Impreza Wagon and the Outback Sport are both 61.6 feet. The Impreza Sedan is a small 11 feet. The Legacy Wagon offers 66.2 feet. The B9 Tribeca SUV starts strong at 74.4 feet.
2007 brought updates. The Forester grew to 68.6 feet. The Old Wagon has been reduced slightly to 65.4 feet. Outback Sedan version? Only 11.4 feet.
2008 is the year of change. Impreza Wagon and Outback Sport drop to 44.4 feet. The WRX Sti Wagon is also listed at 44.4 ft³. Does the Legacy sedan jump 93 feet? Wait a minute, this appears to be a typo in some sources, but the data suggests either a significant increase or a different metric. Let’s stick to the numbers. The Outback rises to 98 feet. The Tribeca reaches 104 feet.
By 2009 Forester ‘s information was gone. The Legacy Sedan returns 11.4 feet. Outback established at 65.4 feet. Tribeca retreated to 74.4 feet. Subaru’s product range is suitable for those who need to transport skis, bicycles and camping equipment without a fortune.
Advantages of Suzuki XL7
Suzuki focused on size with the XL7. The 2006 Suzuki XL7 offers 75.1 feet. By 2007 it had risen to 95.2 feet³. This is a huge advantage. The Grand Vitara has also been improved. 24.4 feet in 2006 to 68.9 feet in 2007. Reno compact cars were sold in 2007 and 2008 with 45.4ft seats folded. The SX4 crossover reached 64 feet in *2007, but dropped to 54 feet in 2008 *.

Toyota cargo capacity
Want to pull something? Check the numbers. The 2006 lineup was simple. Sienna leads with 148.9 cubic feet of space. The Sequoia follows with 128.1 cubic feet. If you want raw quantities, these options are perfect. The 4Runner offers 75.1 cubic feet. The matrix is in the center and is 53.2 cubic feet. Small cars like the Corolla and Camry Solara are 13.6 and 13.8 cubic feet. The volume of the Prius is 16.1 cubic feet.
That changed in 2007. The Avalon’s space has suddenly doubled to 41.4 cubic feet. The Highlanders also grew. It jumps from about 40 cubic feet to 80.6 cubic feet.
