How to Grease Wheel Bearings: Fixing Wheel Vibrations and Screech

Your car doesn’t move because you tell it to move. It moves because friction is being managed aggressively. Wheel bearings are the unsung heroes in that equation. They sit between the axle and the wheel hub, taking the heat so the rotation stays smooth. Without them, metal would grind against metal. The wheel would seize. You’d be walking home.

Skateboards use them. Motorcycles rely on them. But cars? Cars put them through hell. A wheel bearing is essentially a disk housing ball bearings. Those balls roll. They reduce friction. They keep things turning. But grease? That’s what keeps them from screaming. If your steering wheel is vibrating at highway speeds, or if you hear a high-pitched screech that gets louder as you go faster, your bearings are dry. Or worse. They’re failing.

Before you replace them, you might be able to save them. It’s not always about swapping parts. Sometimes it’s about maintenance. Cleaning and repacking wheel bearings with fresh grease can buy you time. It can save you money. Here is how you do it.

Removing the Bearing

First, you have to get the bearing out of the wheel assembly. This usually involves removing the wheel itself. Then comes the hub assembly. Depending on your vehicle, this might mean prying off a dust cap or unbolting the caliper bracket. You don’t need a PhD in mechanical engineering to figure this out, but you do need the right tools. A hammer. A punch. Maybe a hydraulic press if you’re feeling fancy. But for most DIYers, brute force and patience work fine.

Once the bearing is loose, clean it. Old grease is just dirt waiting to happen. Wash it out. Dry it. Inspect it. If the balls are pitted or the race is scored, toss it. Don’t try to fix a broken bearing. But if it looks intact? It’s worth saving.

Packing with Grease

Grab a tub of high-temperature wheel bearing grease. Lithium-based is standard. Don’t skimp. Cheap grease melts. You don’t want that happening at 70 miles per hour.

“You may want to wear a pair of rubber gloves to protect your hands.”

Wear gloves. Grease is a pain to get off skin. And once it’s in your fingernails, you’re done for the day.

Place a generous ball of grease in the palm of one hand. Not a smear. A ball. Now, take the bearing. Push it into the grease with your other hand. Push in the large end first. This is key. You are forcing the grease into the inner parts of the bearing. The balls need to be surrounded. The race needs to be coated.

Keep pushing. Turn the bearing around. Push grease out the small end. You’re looking for the grease to emerge from the opposite side. When it does, you’ve filled the voids. You’ve eliminated the air pockets. Air is the enemy. It oxidizes. It dries out. Grease stays wet.

Final Inspection

Spread the grease so it covers the outside of the bearing too. A light coat on the exterior acts as a seal against dirt and water. It’s not a sealant per se, but it helps.
