Lee Iacocca gets all the credit for the Mustang. It’s easy to see why. He pushed that sporty compact into existence in the mid-sixties and ignited the pony car craze. Ford gave the green light in 1969 to start the Pinto. The clock started ticking. The deadline was brutal: less than 20 months to build, test, and launch the car by September 1970. On February 20, 1971, the Pinto Runabout made its public debut at the Chicago Auto Show. It went on sale five days later. Like the sedan, demand was immediate and strong.
It was priced at $2,062. The Runabout was distinguished from the sedan by exposed chrome hinges for the liftgate and five decorative chrome strips on the back “door.”
