Understand GAWR: ignored weight limits keep you safe

Buying a car can often feel like a comparison process on a spreadsheet. You check zero-to-sixty times. Calculate the cubic feet of the trunk. Check horsepower and torque. I am concerned about my MPG. These are the numbers that lead to glory. They make brochures.

But there is one number that is rarely mentioned. It’s much more important than the 0-60 time. It is the Gross Axle Weight Rating or GAWR.

Most drivers ignore it until it’s too late. You shouldn’t be one of them either.

What exactly is GAWR?

Every vehicle has limitations. It’s not just about towing restrictions. It’s not just about load restrictions. Each axle has a hard top. This upper limit is GAWR. This is the maximum weight that the manufacturer says one axle can support.

The front axles have values. There is another one on the rear axle. These are not interchangeable.

Think of it this way. GAWR is the static limit. It will never change. It is engraved into the design of the car. It doesn’t matter if there are passengers or if the trunk is empty.

Compare with Gross Axle Weight or GAW. This is what your axle is actually carrying now. It varies. It changes as people come and go. It changes when you move the load from the back to the front.

GAWR is a fixed upper safety limit. GAW is the changing reality of loads.

Don’t confuse the two. If the GAW exceeds the GAWR, you are in danger.

Why is this important?

Security is not an abstraction here. It’s mechanical. This is physics.

Manufacturers have these restrictions for a reason. It is dangerous to overload the car. It’s even worse if you overload the trailer. But is one axle overloaded unevenly? You are asking for a crash.

Consider a pickup truck. Imagine you have four stones. Each weighs 100 pounds. Total load: 400 pounds. Dismantling them drops the GAW by 400 pounds. GAWR remains exactly the same.

Return the stone to its original position. The GAW goes up by 400 pounds. GAWR will not change.

The danger lies in its weight. Overloading the rear axle can damage the rear axle.

Your steering becomes sluggish. The front tires lose traction on the road. You lose your ability to react. The brakes do not work effectively. Most of the braking is done with the front brake. If the rear part is loaded too much, the weight distribution will be disturbed. You will slip.

The rear suspension part can be bent. It can break. A blowout is likely. If these parts fail, you lose control. Period.

Trailers have their own GAWR rating. They are specified by the trailer manufacturer. The rules are the same. Balance the load. Don’t cross the line.

How to find GAWR

You don’t need an engineering degree to find this number. Check the door frame.

Look for the sticker on the inside of the driver’s door frame. Usually located near the latch mechanism. A list of weights will be displayed. Look for GAWR. It will list a front number and a rear number.

If you can’t find your sticker, go online. Most manufacturers publish this information. This is public information.

Knowing your GAWR will help you plan accordingly. It will help you decide if you can actually tow the boat. This tells you if you can transport your family and luggage without damaging the rear axle. This is basic math. This is basic security.

BMW axle load limits (2006-2009)

The total axle weight is a strict numerical value. Determines the absolute maximum weight that the suspension can support at one end of the car. Forget how your eyes tell you how “strong” a steel beam looks. Physics doesn’t matter. For BMW enthusiasts, tracking weight distribution, it is important to know exactly where the limits are during track days and heavy tours.

The 2006 lineup includes a performance sedan and a luxury cruiser. The E46 and E60 platforms dominate here. There is M3, M5 and M6. These are pull G-forces. However, information for most 2006 BMW models is not listed on the standard data sheet. The table shows dashes for the 325, 330, 525, and others You need to study it further or measure it yourself.

By 2007, the Z4 was finally released. Front axle takes 2,767 lbs. Rear load capacity is 3770 lbs. The M6 ​​is back. The Alpina B7 belongs to the class of luxury sedans. 335 and 530 are the workhorses of the range. Most sedans don’t have data yet. Only the Z4 and M6 got specific numbers.

The E92 and E93 were introduced in 2008. The 128 and 135 series also participated. X6 debut. But again, the dashes persist. Published GAWR data for this data set is missing for almost all models in series 1–760. X3 and X5 exist but are empty. This can be frustrating for those trying to calculate payload without guesswork.

In 2009, the 750 disappeared from the list, but the 550 and M5 remained. 128 and 135 follow. M3, M5 and M6 remain undefined in this text. The X5 and X6 are listed without ratings. This leaves a big gap between E90 and E70 platform owners.

Ideal if you need a wide range of technical data covering not only axle weight but also GVWR, GCWR, payload, vehicle weight, payload and towing capacity. These numbers tell you everything about the vehicle’s limitations.

Buick GAWR Data (2006-2009)

Buick has a specific group of trucks and crossovers that needed clear weight ratings. The sedan is almost empty. Rainier and Terraza arrived in 2006 with tangible numbers. The Rainier can carry 2,950 pounds in the front and 3,200 pounds in the rear. Terraza is lighter. 1,148 lbs front, 960 lbs rear. The latter number is very low. Be careful with rear-heavy cargo in that vehicle.

In 2007, the keeps the Rainier at 2,950/3,200. The Terraza disappears. La Crosse and Lucerne are listed but not numbered. We can only guess.

Enclave was launched in 2008. This is a heavy cruiser. Front axle weight is 3,197 lbs. Rear weight is 3,527 lbs. That’s a solid rear bias. La Crosse and Lucerne remain uncertain.

The Enclave keeps its 3,197/3,527 split. These sedans are still mystery boxes. If you drive a LaCrosse or Lucerne, you’ll have to find these numbers elsewhere.

The complete spec package includes GVWR, GCWR and payload. These are the standard metrics for comparing Buick’s capacity.

Cadillac GAWR Breakdown (2006-2009)

Cadillac offers the most versatile weight ratings in the luxury segment. The Escalade family is the highlight. The standard 2006 Escalade supports 3,350 pounds at the front wheels and 4,000 pounds at the rear wheels. The ESV version has a light rear axle weight of 2,809 pounds. The EXT pickup is a beast. 3800lbs front and 4000lbs rear.

CTS was also assessed in 2006. 2,232 lbs front, 2,379 lbs rear. V6 and V8 versions may vary, but this is the starting point. CTS-V, DTS, SRX, STS and XLR are all empty. You have to measure or find a different source.

In 2007, the CTS was 2,232/2,379. The Escalade model returned, but without the numbers. The CTS-V is still missing its rating. Oddly, while the standard CTS has ratings, the high-performance V version is not included in this data set.

In 2008 and 2009, CTS was delisted. Escalade, ESV, EXT and Hybrid models are listed but empty. SRX, STS and XLR are not yet defined. The only consistent data points are the 2006 CTS and 2006 Escalade models.

Additional information such as payload and towing capacity are very important to Cadillac owners. GVWR and GCWR provide the total envelope while GAWR indicates whether or not it will damage the axle.

Chevrolet GAWR Specifications (2006-2009)

Chevrolet’s product range is extensive. These trucks speak of heavy-duty capability. The 2006 Silverado 3500 HD has a rear axle weight of 8,550 lbs. This is huge. The front is 4,670 lbs. The 2500 HD Rear weighs 6,084 lbs. The 1500 series is light. Front 3650, rear 4000.

The Avalanche 1500 has 3,400 front and 4,000 rear. The 2500 version jumped to 4,380 in the front and 5,500 in the rear. The Suburban 2500 is shaped like a truck and has 3,800 front wheels and 5,500 rear wheels. The Tahoe has slightly less rear axle capacity at 3,750 pounds.

Small cars like the Cobalt and Aveo have no ratings. The Corvette is also empty. This makes sense for streetcars, but leaves a gap for track enthusiasts.

In 2007, a change took place. The Silverado 1500 Classic keeps the 3,650/4,000 split. The rear of the 2500 HD is still 6,084. The rear weight of the 3500 drops slightly to 6,390 lbs. The passenger capacity of the Suburban 1500 increases to 3,300 passengers in the front and 4,200 passengers in the back. The Tahoe’s rear weight can go up to 4,100 lbs.

It was basically 2008 all over again. The Tahoe Hybrid is listed but not rated. Introducing the Malibu Hybrid. The Corvette remains unspecified. The Silverado 3500 HD has a curb weight of 6,390 lbs.

In 2009, the numbers got weird. The front axle weight of the Silverado 1500 is 6,800 lbs. Rear weight is 3,650 lbs. This is upside down. A reassessment of the past? Or is that a typo? This is abnormal. The weight of the Silverado 2500 HD front end jumps to 9,200 kilograms. Rear weight is 4200 lbs. This means a change in the platform design or an emphasis on a certain upholstery. The front axle of the Colorado weighs 5000 kilograms. It’s pretty big for a midsize truck. Rear weight is 2,633 lbs. The information here seems contradictory.

The Traverse made the list in 2009 by selling 3,197 units in the front row and 3,527 units in the rear row. This corresponds to the Buick Enclave number. Same platform.

All Chevrolet specifications include vehicle weight and payload. These will help you calculate how much gear you can realistically carry without exceeding your GVWR.

Chrysler GAWR Ratings (2006-2009)

Chrysler reviews are very low. 300 and 300C are empty. PT Cruiser and Sebring are not numbered. Pacifica is also undefined.

Aspen is the only uniform truck/SUV in the collection. The 2007, 2008, and 2009 models all weigh 3,100 pounds in the front and 3,900 pounds in the rear. This is a good rating for a mid-size SUV.

The Aspen Hybrid was launched in 2009. Front axle weight increases to 3,600 lbs. The rear weight remains at 3900 kilos. Adding a battery shifts the weight forward.

Caravan, city and country information are missing. This is a big gap for minivan owners who carry heavy loads.

Ford’s load limits and Heavy Duty Specs

Ford’s Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) method shows exactly where the structural limits are. It’s not just about the total weight of the truck. It’s all about how the weight is distributed between the front and rear axles. Here’s what you need to know before loading your bed or truck.

First look at the 2006 E Series. The E-150 can handle 3,240 pounds in the front and 3,800 pounds in the rear. Step up to the E-250 the rear weight to 5,520 lbs. The E-350 Super Duty is a beast here. The front axle takes 3,700 pounds and the rear axle 6,195 pounds. It has a considerable carrying capacity for a work van.

Smaller Ford trucks have tighter on their limits. The 2006 Escape sits at 2,240 pounds in the front and 2,115 pounds in the rear. The axles of the hybrid version are slightly heavier, 2,380 in the front and 2,175 in the rear. If you’re running a 2006 Crown Victoria, Five Hundred, Focus, Freestyle, Fusion, GT, Mustang, Ranger, or Taurus, Ford didn’t publish specific GAWR data for those models in this dataset.

The F-Series continues its dominance. The F-150 can carry 3,450 pounds in the front and 3,800 pounds in the rear. The F-250 has 3,800 front and 6,100 rear. The F-350 has a tops out at of 3,800 pounds and a rear axle weight of 7,000 pounds.

By 2007, Explorer dropped slightly to 2,860 lbs front and 3,340 lbs rear. Sport Trac added 3,080 front and 3,320 to the rear. The Edge, Expedition, and Expedition EL didn’t have specific GAWR data listed the Edge, Expedition, and Expedition EL are not listed. The F-Series remained steady.

In 2008, brought changes. The rear GAWR of the E-150 increased to 5,120 lbs. The E-250’s stayed at 5,520 pounds. The E-350 Super Duty moved to 3,800 front and 6,084 rear. The F-350’s rear axle weight has dropped slightly to 6,262 lbs. The F-450 entered the chart with of 5,600 pounds and a lbs rear of 9,500 pounds. This is a commercial-grade limit.

The E-350 Super Duty’s front axle jumped to 2009 E-350 Super Duty jumps to 4,200 lbs. The F-150 gained ground, hitting 3,800 pounds in the front and 6,100 pounds in the rear. The F-450’s flipped its ratings, now showing 3,800 in the front and 6,262 in the rear, suggesting a configuration change or specific trim data. The Flex, Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Ranger, Taurus and Taurus X again lack published GAWR numbers.

GMC Axle Weight Capacities

GMC’s lineup focuses heavily on trucks and SUVs. The 2006 Canyon handles 2,533 lbs in the front and 2,896 pounds in the rear. Envoy seats are located 2,950 meters forward and 3,200 meters aft. The XL version of the Envoy adds a few, 3,100 in the front and 3,400 in the rear.

2006 Savana Vans (1500, 2500, 3500) do not have GAWR information listed. This is common in older vans, where payload is usually calculated by GVWR minus curb weight rather than axle limits. The Sierra 1500 has 3,150 seats in the front and 3,686 seats in the rear. The Sierra 2500’s torque jumps to 4,410 up front and 6,084 in the rear. The larger Sierra 3500 has a front wheel capacity of 4,800 and a rear wheel capacity of 6,500.

2006 SUVs include the Yukon, priced at 3,200 in the front and 3,750 in the rear. The XL version has a rear axle weight of 4,000 lbs.

The Acadia was launched in 2007. It carries 3,197 pounds in the front and 3,527 pounds in the rear. The canyon remains stable. The gap with the Sierra 2500 has narrowed slightly to 4,200. The weight of the Sierra 3500 drops to 4,200 pounds on the front axle and 6,390 pounds on the rear axle. The Yukon’s rear GAWR increased to 4,100 lbs. The XL version has a curb weight of 4,200 pounds.

Most of those numbers remain unchanged for 2008. The Yukon Hybrid has the same range as the standard Yukon: 3,200 miles on the front wheels and 4,100 miles on the rear wheels.

For 2009, the front axle on the Canyon increased by 100 pounds to 2,633 pounds. Sierra 2500 and 3500 front axles are still 4,200 pounds. Concrete GAWR numbers are missing from the Sierra Hybrid. The Yukon XL’s rear GAWR drops slightly to 4,200 lbs.

Honda’s load values and limits of SUVs

Honda has very little information about the sedan. The 2006 Odyssey is the only model with specific numbers: 2,833 pounds in the front and 3,197 pounds in the rear. The crest line starts at 3,099 meters in front and 3,252 meters at the back. Note the typo (309) in the source data for the 2006 Ridgeline front axle. This will either be changed to a logical £3,099 depending on the circumstances and subsequent years, or will be considered a lack of information if strict compliance is required. Based on this formula, 3,099 could be a typo. Wait, look at 2007, it was 3105. The 2006 number “309” is almost certainly a typo for 3099. Use normal axle loads to ensure accuracy.

Sedans such as Accord, Civic, CR-V, Element (2006), Insight, Pilot and S2000 do not have GAWR numbers for 2006.

In 2007, things changed. The Civic’s special rating is 2,310 points in the front and 2,290 points in the rear. Element also made the list with 2,300 sold in the front and 2,205 in the rear. Odyssey is stuck at 2,833/3,197. The Pilot has 2,865 seats in the front and 3,155 seats in the back. The Ridgeline moves 3,105 in the front and 3,252 in the rear.

In 2008, the Civic, Element, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline are stable. Accord Hybrid and S2000 are still missing information.

By 2009, the Civic lost its specific GAWR listing in this dataset. The weight of the Pilot increases significantly, jumping to 2,921 pounds on the front axle and 3,196 pounds on the rear axle. The Odyssey remains the same. Information is not available for the Accord, Civic Hybrid, Fit and S2000 models.

Lobster durability and weight

Hummer is simple. In later years, H2 became predominant. As of 2006, the front weight capacity is 4,000 pounds and the rear weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. The H1 Alpha is more powerful, 4100 in the front and 6800 in the rear. H3 has no GAWR data listed.

H2 remained at 4,000/5,000 in 2007, 2008 and 2009. H3T was launched in 2009 and no specific GAWR data is available. H1 alpha only appears in the 2006 dataset.

Hyundai and Infiniti options

There is little information about Hyundai cars. In 2006, there were no models in the GAWR catalog. The 2007 Entourage has 2,998 miles on the front and 3,064 on the rear. The Santa Fe has 4,976 miles on the front and 3,197 miles on the rear. this

Jeep axle weight limit

The 2006 Jeep lineup has significant differences in performance. Jeep Liberty front end GAWR is 2750 lbs. and a rear GAWR of 3150 lbs. The Wrangler front GAWR is 2,200 lbs, but the rear axle is equivalent to 2,650 lbs. Larger vehicles such as the Commander and Grand Cherokee do not have the specific axle breaks listed here.

Two years later, the Wrangler is even more powerful. For the 2007 model, weight increases to 2,650 pounds in the front and 3,400 pounds in the rear. Liberty stays put. The new Compass and Patriot are also included, but their axle weights are not listed in this dataset.

By 2008, the Wrangler and the new Wrangler Unlimited were 2650/3400 lbs. In this particular view, the Liberty configuration is no longer visible.

Kia Carrying capacity

Kia’s early sedans, such as the Amanti and Optima, had no axle restrictions. But look at something heavier. The 2006 Sorento is well balanced with a front and rear weight of 3307 lbs. Sedona The minivan weighs 3,064 pounds in the rear and 2,998 pounds in the front. The Sportage is asymmetrical and weighs 2,579 lbs up front and just 2,425 lbs in the rear.

The 2007 Rio and Rio 5 are very light. 1918 lbs front, 1874 lbs rear. Large SUVs remain uniform. The Borrego was introduced in 2009 but has no axle data.

Land Rover GAWR Breakdown

Land Rovers of this era had very little technical information. LR3, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport do not include front/rear GAWR for 2006-2008.

Then in 2009 LR2 was introduced. It finally breaks the seal on the front axle at 2885 lbs and the rear axle at 2995 lbs. For larger Land Rovers, remain undefined.

Lexus performance and cargo capacity

Lexus dominates the luxury car segment with tight tolerances. IS-F and IS 350 are high-performance sedans. LX 570 is the heavy hitter.

Lexus expanded its product range in 2008. GS 460 and LS 600h have join the fray. The IS-F makes its debut. However, these luxury cars do not have GAWR numbers listed. This silence suggests that this information is private or simply not tracked in this public format.

Lincoln Heavy Duty Transporter

Lincoln is cautious about sedans. MKX, MKZ, Town Car have no listed GAWR.

Trucks and SUVs tell different stories. From 2006 to 2008, the Mark LT weight remained stable at 3450 lbs front and 3850 lbs rear. Navigator is a workhorse. In 2006 it weighed 3,300/4,128 lbs. By 2007, its strength increased to 3350/4300 lbs. 2009 Navigator is slightly adjusted to 3450/3850 lbs. MKS came on the market in 2009, but nothing was known about axle restrictions yet.

Mazda asymmetrical axle

Mazda’s B Series trucks are designed to carry cargo. B2300 Capacity 2400 lbs. front and 2750 lbs rear. The B4000 pushes 2850lbs, but rear stays capped to 2750lbs. This is a strange distribution.

Passenger cars are out of balance. The 2007 MazdaSpeed3 is lighter in the rear, at 2,216 pounds in the front and 2,064 pounds in the rear. MX-5 is similarly skewed at 2449/2103 lbs. Mazda6 Varies by model year. 2006 weighs 2372/2119 lbs. In 2008 it drops to 2216/2064 lbs. In 2009 it settles at 2286/2062 lbs. Mazda5 Minivan weighed 2218/2355 lbs in 2006 and 2007, but has since disappeared from the list.

Mercedes-Benz AMG Limited

Mercedes lists a wide range of models. From the C-Class to the SLR McLaren, most do not display GAWR data. Exceptions are G classes, GL classes, ML classes, but they are still often missing.

2009 ML550 and ML63 AMG shown but without axle weights. This gap has caused enthusiasts to ponder the true carrying capacity of the German engineering marvels.

Mercury and MINI Snapshots

In 2006, the Mercury Mountaineer weighed 2,860 pounds in the front and 3,340 pounds in the rear. This specification has since disappeared. In Milano, Mariner and Sable you can arrive empty-handed.

MINI is very transparent for a small car. Cooper Convertible and Hardtop have a front end weight of approximately 1,900 lbs. John Cooper Works Models push boundaries. The 2009 JCW Clubman weighs 1,929 pounds in the front and 1,863 pounds in the rear. The 2008 Cooper Clubman is perfectly balanced and weighs 1830/1830 lbs.

The data stops there. Some have numbers, others are silent. Creating a download table is enough, but not enough to manage everything.

Nissan Heavy Duty front axle limitations

The first thing you see is the 2006 Nissan Titan. Although individual axial loads are not listed in this snapshot, the platform is designed for this purpose. Flash forward to 2007. The Titan’s weight jumps to 3300/3800 pounds front and rear. That rear rating is serious. This shows that the suspension and frame can withstand heavier towbar loads without a bottom. The Frontier was launched in 2007 and weighs 3296/3197 lbs. Notice how these figures balance. Front and back almost the same. This suggests that the rigid chassis is designed to distribute weight evenly, perhaps for towing or carrying cargo on a cargo bed.

As of 2009, Frontier still has 3296/3197. This is consistent. The GT-R was introduced in 2009 but did not feature GAWR. You don’t need to know the axle limits of your track day car, but you do need to know the axle limits of your work truck. Armada and Pathfinder are listed as missing data points for the respective years. That’s a gap. If you’re planning heavy recovery or towing installations on your old Armada, check the door frame sticker. These tables are not exhaustive.

Pontiac Torque and Torque Tubing

Pontiac is long gone, but if you’re restoring a GTO or Solstice, the 2006-2009 numbers are important. The Torrent stands out. 2006, 2007, 2009 front and rear weights are 2535/2535 lbs. The amounts are equal. This is no accident. This means symmetrical all-wheel drive or a suspension tuned for neutral handling. The 2007 Grand Prix result was 62/38. Wait. This is a relationship. Or a typo. The weight distribution appears to be 62% front and 38% rear, not absolute pounds. With buns, the front axle capacity is lower than the driver’s capacity. It’s not possible. Think of the 62/38 designation as a weight distribution number, not a GAWR limitation.

The G8 was introduced in 2008 and 2009. There are no numbers. G6? there is nothing. You have to dig into the specs. Vibe and Saturn Outlook share a platform. See the Saturn section below. Vibe has no data. But what about Outlook? It’s so heavy.

Saab 9-7X and Saturn Outlook payload

Saab and Saturn often have common bones. The 2008 and 2009 9-7X weighs 2950/3400 lbs. front and back. The back is stronger. This makes sense because a truck-based SUV might tow a trailer or carry equipment in the back. 9-3 and 9-5 do not contain a specific GAWR number. It’s a small car. The limits are lower, but due to the lack of information we cannot assume that the limits correspond to the truck model.
